Ditch the Paper Cup: Why I’m Taking Fine Bone China to the Beach
Ditch the paper cup.
That’s the small change I’m making this spring and summer.
I know takeaway cups are convenient and flasks are practical, but if you’re anything like me, coffee and tea simply don’t taste the same from cardboard or stainless steel.
For me, one of life’s simple pleasures is drinking from fine bone china. The feel of it in your hand, the delicate rim, the familiar comfort of a favourite mug. It’s all about the taste — somehow coffee tastes richer and tea tastes brighter from a proper cup.
Now, before we go any further, I should confess something.
Coffee is my go-to.
Whenever I arrive at a beach, before I do anything else, I’ll grab a coffee and spend a few minutes wave-watching. Looking at the sets, checking the wind, deciding whether it’s worth paddling out. Coffee is always the starting point. It’s a ritual I’ve come to treasure.
At home, the Nespresso machine goes on, and for a few quiet moments, all is well with the world.
If I’m out and about, it’s usually a double-shot flat white.
Sometime around eleven o’clock, I switch to tea. Not because there’s a rule book, but because it’s become part of the natural rhythm of my day.
Whether it’s my morning coffee or an afternoon cup of tea, one thing remains the same: both taste better from a proper mug.
For me, that means fine bone china.
So this spring and summer, I’m making room in my beach bag for a china mug.
It might sound unusual, but hear me out.
Picture the scene.
You’ve spent the morning in the surf. The wetsuit is hanging up to dry. You’ve wrapped yourself in a poncho, settled onto a blanket, and the evening sun is beginning to soften over the water.
The crowds begin to thin. The light turns golden. The sea settles into that familiar evening rhythm.
The kettle boils. The tea is brewed. And instead of reaching for a disposable cup, you pull out your favourite fine bone china mug.
It’s a small thing, but it transforms the moment.
Taking a proper mug with you isn’t about being fancy. It’s about enjoying life’s simple pleasures properly.
It’s also one less disposable cup heading for the bin.
So next time you’re packing for a day on the Cornish coast, don’t forget the essentials:
- Beach bag
- Towel
- Cap
- Poncho or changing robe
- Blanket
- Outdoor cushions
- Water bottle
- Favourite fine bone china mug
The best days are often made up of the smallest moments.
A good wave.
A warm breeze.
Friends on the beach.
A well-earned cup of coffee in the morning or tea in the afternoon.
And for me, every coffee and every cup of tea tastes better from fine bone china.
What about you? Are you team paper cup, team flask, or would you consider packing a proper mug for your next beach day? I’d love to hear your thoughts over in our instagram page.
